Post your ideas for the first part of the course: What are your expectations for public education? What are the expectations for public education in the U.S.?
When I think of how we do school, I can’t help but feel disappointed in how we “fail” to prepare our students day in and day out. The typical school classroom right now is full of teachers standing in front of the classroom lecturing and performing the question and answer strategy and we call that learning; no discussion, or elaboration. I believe school should be first and foremost, a safe place for students to learn. I also think school should serve as a place for relationships to be formed, relevant lessons to take place, where character education is made just as important as scholarly education, and where challenges and application of knowledge is required.
My expectations for schooling have evolved over the course of my time at WVU in the education program. I also had similar expectations, but they are now more in depth and more critical to learning. I expect school to be an accepting learning environment, where students feel accepted not only by their peers, but by their educators as well. When teachers give students respect, the students give them respect in return. While student teaching at North Elementary, I was able to see first hand just how essential an accepting environment is for student learning. The students at that school come from many different countries and have many different norms but they come together to work hard and collaborate to learn. I expect collaboration. I expect collaboration between students, between students and teachers, and between educators. Collaboration between students is something I believe in very strongly. I feel that by working together students not only gain a better understanding of the content, but they are learning to work with different people. Throughout their lives they are going to need to collaborate with people. I feel that in the classroom, collaboration can teach students how to respectfully disagree with one another while getting their point across. The teachers and students should also be collaborating to keep accountability of their work. In addition, educators should be collaborating constantly. This helps teachers understand issues more and they may gain different ideas to solve their classroom problems. The countries expectations for public schooling is high test scores and high graduation rates. They want the teachers to teach to the test effectively so that the students all obtain above average scores.
My expectations for public education is to ensure a nurturing, safe, and fun learning environment for children. Public education should be free and equal to all students. It should provide an equal opportunity for each to student learn according to their needs. The expectations for public education in the U.S. are state standards and if those standards are being met in the classroom.
Schools are expected to be safe, friendly learning environments. As students we are expected to come prepared with a positive attitudes ready to learn every day so they can pass standardized tests . As teachers we are expected to teach standards and prepare students so they can become anything they want once they graduate.
We need to meet standards. I think students do need to be able to do a list of things, like standards, but they also need to be prepared for society by teaching morals.
My expectations of school and schooling are to educate students for the future. That can be academically or in life as students should be growing through learning and development. It should also have teachers wanting to be better educators. America's expectation is to have teachers jump through hoops and to change requirements whenever possible. Teachers are also looked down upon from those who are not affected by the education system or potentially feel like they have been wronged. A lot of teachers are blamed for things that are not their fault.
My expectations for public education is getting students engaged and interested in materials rather than teaching to the test. Students are going to make the most progress when they are truly excited about what they are learning. The expectations for public schools is for students to get high test scores. It seems like the school system is too focused on getting a perfect score and less about students learning. My expectation for school is teaching kids how to prepare for life rather then to focus only on the basic subjects. My expectation is to teach students to be good people.
My expectations for public school is to make sure that are students are safe at school and that they are learning in a way that is comfortable for them. For example, I think that there should be multiple different ways that teachers go about teaching and not just teaching the same way every single day. I believe that the teachers should have a good relationship with their students. The students should feel comfortable when they come to school. All in all, I think that public education should prepare students for college and/or real life situations when they get out of school.
My hopes for public education is that things will get better. I hope that the government will find ways to fund all schools and we will settle on just one set of standards. My expectations are that things will get worse before they get better. From what we have read, I know that it takes dedicated people advocating for a change in order for the schooling system to get better. I think that public schools need to focus on how to educate every individual students in the way they need to learn.
I think the expectations of schools is that students are prepared for the real world. My expectation for school is that every student has an equal opportunity to learn. I believe that school should be a safe environment for students to learn and students should feel comfortable in their classes.
We expect schooling to be hands on. We expect for schooling to be relevant to our students' lives as well as hitting the required standards. We expect schooling to be engaging and for students to be motivated. We expect for teachers to see their students as individuals. We expect for classrooms to be democratic, dialogic, and culturally relevant. We expect for schools to create the most productive learning environment. -Anna
I believe schools should have high learning standards and provide a safe learning environment for all students. Students should feel comfortable and be motivated to learn. These are the same expectations I have for U.S. public schools.
My expectations for public education is for all schools to be inclusive and be a safe space for all students. I think all schools should have resources to help meet the needs of their students and tools to help them be successful. School should be a positive environment for all students to express themselves, their views, personalities, and culture. All schools should be equipped with qualified teachers who are willing to teach to all the students and modify and accommodate to each students specific needs. Expectations for schools in the US vary from state to state and county to county. I believe that it shouldn't be different fundamental differences between schools but each should be culturally responsive and incorporate and promote the community and culture around it.
My expectation: I think public education is trying to prepare students for the real world. Creating a safe and nurturing classroom community where students can learn.
US Expectations: Prepare students for careers and college. How to be a productive member of society.
